Your PR card is official proof that you are a permanent resident of Canada. You need this card to enter and stay in Canada when you return from another country.
A permanent resident may:
- Apply for an initial PR card
- Renew a PR Card that has or will soon expire or
- Replace a PR Card that has been lost, stolen or damaged
When to submit your PR Card renewal application?
You should apply to renew your PR card if it will expire within 6 months.
What if you have lost the PR card inside OR outside Canada?
If you have lost your PR card inside Canada, you must submit your application as soon as possible at the CIC office near you. We can assist you in applying for your permanent residence card application.
If your PR card expires or is lost or stolen while you are outside Canada, you need to apply for a travel document to return to Canada.
